Job Description
The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for the physicians of Massachusetts and patients locally and nationally. A leadership voice in health care, the MMS contributes physician and patient perspectives to influence health-related legislation at the state and federal levels, works in support of public health, provides expert advice on physician practice management, and addresses issues of physician well-being. Under the auspices of the NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine, NEJM Catalyst, and the NEJM Journal Watch family of specialty publications, and through our education products for health care professionals: NEJM Knowledge+, NEJM Resident 360, and our accredited and comprehensive continuing medical education programs.
We are currently seeking a Senior Editor and Writer, Digital Communications. The world has changed, and so has the way we work. The MMS has adopted a flexible work model that allows most employees to choose where they work - at home, onsite in our Boston office, or a combination of the two - based on their preferences and our business needs. Because what matters is the work we do, not where we do it.
The Senior Editor and Writer, Digital Communications develops and produces the Society's member-focused publications and e-newsletters and contributes to the department's overall communications strategy. She/He/They contributes to and manages the day-to-day editorial operations of the department.
Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for the day-to-day editorial operations of the department, ensuring the timely delivery of information via the Society's digital and/or print publications. Serves as the primary editor and reviews member-related communications to ensure brand consistency and quality.
2. Contributes to the development of a broader communications department publications strategy. Leads the ongoing evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of the Society's member-related publications with the goals of maintaining best practices and developing enhanced value for members and other strategic audiences.
3. Implements the Society's long-term communications strategy to encourage member engagement through a variety of digital and print written materials.
4. Develops and manages the department's editorial calendar, including the incorporation of signature events from the Society's broader organizational calendar (e.g., Annual Meeting, BOT meetings, the State of the State, Future Health: Best Practices in Advancing Care, and other member-related events).
5. Identifies themes and content for the department's digital membership newsletter and publications. Serves as a primary author for the production and editing of feature content.
6. Compiles and edits announcements for weekly digital membership newsletter.
7. Monitors, evaluates, and reports on relevant communication performance metrics, e.g., email open rates, click-throughs, survey response rates, etc.
8. Collaborates with internal graphic designers to develop graphic elements and formatting of digital newsletters and other publications.
9. Collects relevant information, writes, edits, and produces the Society's Annual Report.
10. Supports advertising function for the department, assisting Business Development Director, Sponsorship, Exhibit, & Advertising Sales, managing the placement advertisements in digital newsletter and other publications, as needed.
11. Collaborates with staff across the organization to ensure brand identity and consistency across all member-related communications.
12. Assists with writing and editing of presentations for the Officers and management, and other leadership communications as necessary.
13. Assists with content development and monitoring for the Society's social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, etc. as needed.
14. Assists with responsibilities for drafting or editing web copy as needed.
15. Serves as committee staff liaison as needed.
16. Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
* A Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or equivalent in a relevant field.
* Five or more years of experience in written communications, with a strong emphasis in health care.
* Excellent communication skills; an ability to create clear and compelling communications orally and in writing.
* Strong editing background and experience following a style guide.
* Experience working with graphic designers in publication design, layout, and production.
* Superior time management skills, creative problem-solving skills, and strong initiative to complete projects on time; must be able to work independently, multi-task, and balance multiple projects at a time, planning around a strict editorial calendar.
* Ability to perform with poise under tight deadlines and shifting priorities.
* Ability to develop and implement sound strategic communications plans to assist in achieving organizational objectives.
* Extremely detail-oriented and self-motivated.
* Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact cooperatively and productively with vendors, consultants, and employees at all levels of the organization.
* A team-oriented and professional demeanor.
* Experience using and managing email communication platforms (e.g., Constant Contact, Mailchimp, Real Magnet, Adobe Campaign).
* Proficient in Microsoft Office products (especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
* Familiarity with Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X best practices.
* Web content management experience a plus.
