Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on preventing workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education to individuals within the organization. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Associate Safety related duties: Prevents workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education for employees. An organizational related support or service (administrative or clerical) role or a role that focuses on support of daily business activities (e.g., technical, clinical, non-clinical) operating in a "hands on" environment. The majority of time is spent in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. A specialist level role that requires very advanced knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through extensive work experience and may require vocational or technical education. Works under limited supervision for non-routine situations and may be responsible for leading daily operations, and trains, delegates and reviews the work of lower level employees, and problems are typically difficult and non-routine but not complex.

Job Overview

Under general supervision of department leadership, this position is responsible for the overall command and leadership of a shift work-group within the department. Provides mentorship, guidance and front-line supervision to Public Safety Officers in the performance of all duties and responsibilities related to the day to day protection and safety of patients, staff and visitors; as well as the security of hospital assets and information. Responsible for basic healthcare public safety duties, enforcement of the Criminal Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Special State Police Officer under MGL 22C-63 or Boston Special Officer under BPD Rule 400.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Graduate of an approved Reserve Intermittent or Full Time Police Academy certified by the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC).

3. Licensed as a Special State Police Officer pursuant to MGL 22c Section 63.

4. Security or First Responder certifications such as CPR/AED, CPI NCI, AVADE, MOAB, MDTS, Stop the Bleed, Nasal Naloxone Certifications, and Hazmat.

5. Three (3) years of security operations experience with (1) year of hospital-based experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.

2. Prior supervisory experience.

3. Experience in Critical Incident Planning, Intervention, and Management.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Responsible for the overall operation & performance of assigned shift/work group. Continually monitors staff performance, and makes recommendations to department leadership concerning commendations, promotions, disciplinary action, and/or training. Participates in the employee performance appraisal process by giving department leadership feedback on staff performance.

2. Provides leadership and professional development guidance to all Public Safety Officers (sworn & non-sworn) and under their responsibility, including providing and documenting constructive feedback.

In the absence of more senior-level department leadership, acts as the senior most representative of the department on Public Safety related matters, disaster response, or other operational issues involving the department and Medical Center.

3.Participates in the organizational development process by participating in process change/improvement activities. Makes recommendation for process changes and takes corrective action concerning process deviations.

4. Reviews and approves all incident reports filed by staff under their responsibility. Initiates or delegates the commencement of initial investigations into incidents or crimes occurring on the Medical Center campus.

5. May perform basic public safety and police duties such as conducting internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds, responding to and reporting on both routine and emergency calls for service, restraining violent patients and/or visitors; monitors assigned area for suspicious activity, prepares and completes all daily logs and incident reports and ensures accurate and detailed reports; and screening vendors and visitors entering the facility, ensuring compliance with established procedures.

6. As appropriate, makes arrests and enforces the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including booking, arraignment and court prosecution of arrestees, securing of evidence and conducting searches and seizures in compliance with laws and applicable court decisions.

7. Identifies issues, concerns, or conflicts requiring resolution; and completely and impartially reviews each situation to obtain the necessary facts to formulate a resolution. Attempts to resolve situations within his/her immediate control, and communicates these situations or those outside of their control/capacity, to superiors and actively participates in the response. Obtains all necessary facts to resolve issues, conflicts, and concerns within their control in an impartial manner; reports those problems outside of their control to a superior for resolution.

8. Provides excellent customer service by assisting and interacting with patients, visitors, and other hospital staff in a manner that conveys the highest level of dignity, respect, courtesy, and professionalism. Maintains composure under stressful circumstances. Strives to de-escalate situations when confronted with uncooperative or belligerent individuals.

9. May require assisting senior officers in the performance of one or more of the following additional duties: Community Outreach assignments, such as Loss & Crime Prevention, Community Policing; Support assignments, such as functioning as a backup/relief dispatcher, Lost and Found/Property Custodian, Department Equipment/Vehicle Custodian.

10. Actively participates and coordinates investigations, conducts interviews, reviews recorded video, prepares case files, catalogs and secures evidence as required.

11. Assists with all emergencies and disasters that may affect the Medical Center, including: crowd control; evacuations and other responsibilities as directed by supervisors.

12. Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working group's achievement of goals, as well as to help foster a positive work environment

13. Continually monitors staff activity; coaches, counsels and commends employees, as appropriate, on performance matters. Ensures, that all personnel are performing in accordance with policies and established guidelines. Makes recommendations for corrective action, additional training, and commendations.

14. Is responsible for the supervision of the department's operations; including the assignment of personnel, communication within the department, and the on-scene command of incidents/events responded to. In the absence of management staff, acts as a senior representative of the department.

15. As assigned, functions as a training officer for newly hired public safety officers. Monitors the new hire training process.

Physical Requirements:

1. Professional office environment with typical office requirements such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.

2. Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate and exchange information.

3. Available to respond to any emergency situation or need to commence an investigation after normal working hours, carry a pager or other notification devices.

4. Able to see and read computers displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.

5. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

6. Physically able to perform physical activities such as response to daily operations situations and emergency/disaster situations.

7. Possibility of injury due to eviction of unauthorized persons, restraint of violent patients, arrests, etc.

8. Exposure to various areas containing hazardous material and radioactive substances when performing patrols.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

2. Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.

3. Ability to successfully complete all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department.

4. Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines.

5. Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions based on the information present, and take appropriate action based on the information available.

6. Skilled in emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy and tact with poise and self- confidence devoid of negative remarks.

7. Must be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous and disciplined.

8. Ability to read and write at a proficient level.

9. Basic Computer Skills required.
