About the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center

The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center is enabling a new field of interdisciplinary research at the intersection of the data and life sciences, aimed at improving human health. Our researchers and partners work together to make the biological questions of our time key drivers for foundational advances in machine learning - and vice versa.

The Scientific Writer will support the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center under the leadership of Professor Caroline Uhler, Core Institute Member at the Broad and Director of the Schmidt Center. The candidate will play a key role in effectively communicating the complex work of the Uhler Lab and Schmidt Center researchers to a variety of audiences (e.g., other scientists, laypersons, sponsors) and help translate the research into manuscripts, funding applications, presentations, reports, and online media.

The candidate will be an integral part of the Schmidt Center staff and will work closely with the director, staff and research members on multiple projects simultaneously. This position requires excellent and demonstrated scientific writing and a deep understanding of computational biology, machine learning, genomics, or a related field.

RESPONSIBILITIES

General Scientific Writing

  • Collaborate with the Director and researchers in the EWSC and Uhler Lab to conceptualize and craft scientific publications and presentations
  • Assist researchers in translating research results into manuscript format and guide them through the publication process
  • Apply scientific and communication quality control to ensure work products meet formatting and internal/external policy/regulatory requirements, are error-free, and present scientific ideas clearly, accurately, and persuasively.
  • Analyze and interpret research results and scientific literature for grant proposal narratives, reports, letters of recommendation, fellowship applications, etc.
  • Contribute to editing major scientific manuscripts, reviews, formal correspondence, and other key documents

Grant Writing and Reporting

  • Conduct prospect research to identify potential funding sources
  • Assist in planning, writing, editing, and submitting grant proposals and progress reports for federal and industrial sponsors
  • Collaborate with administrative and financial staff in EWSC and the Office of Sponsored Research, scientific collaborators, sponsoring organizations and/or peer-reviewed journals to compile documents and ensure timely and complete proposal submissions
  • Think creatively about communication strategy with EWSC leadership around dissemination of results and technologies, career development of group members, impact of research results, and recruitment
  • Partner with other Schmidt Center and Broad staff in preparing reports for philanthropic funding/donors
  • Assist in preparing material for externally facing sites such as Twitter, website, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in computational biology, machine learning, genomics or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience as a full-time professional writer; editing experience at a major scientific journal is a plus
  • Exceptional writer with a strong science background capable of collaboratively crafting scientific narrative to deliver clear, accurate, and compelling pieces
  • Proven ability to translate complex scientific concepts for multiple audiences, balancing clarity and flair
  • Able to effectively collaborate with researchers at various levels and scientific backgrounds
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and people skills. Ability to work closely and effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and interviewing skills to gather information from technical staff to support writing assignments
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to thrive in dynamic environment with multiple overlapping and shifting objectives
  • Capable of coordinating concurrent work by numerous contributors for complex products to on-deadline delivery
