Job Overview

This position is a proficient Surgical Technician who practices under the supervision of the surgical team in the Operating Room to deliver patient care throughout the perioperative experience. Assists the Surgeon during surgery by providing the appropriate instruments and in maintaining and organizing operating room equipment. Performs according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital. Works cooperatively within department and other services to create a system of quality health care.

Hours: Part-Time / 24 hours a week / Evenings / 3pm-11pm/ EOW

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program OR was employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on or before July 1, 2013; has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard or in the United States Public Health Service which has been deemed appropriate by the commissioner; or is performing surgical technology tasks or functions in the service of the federal government OR Massachusetts's Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

3. Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) OR Becomes Certified within one (1) year of hire

4. Two (2) years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, scrubbing in all major services.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Three (3) years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Selects and prepares the appropriate supplies and equipment for any of the above cases.
  • Operates surgical equipment appropriately.
  • Scrubs on surgical cases, participates in surgery by organizing the instrumentation to the surgeon, participating in surgical counts, and performs related activities under the directions of the surgeon.
  • When not participating on surgical cases the Delivery Room Technician will assist the circulator, with positioning obtaining needed items during surgery, and assisting in room turnover activities.
  • The Delivery Room Technician will participate in Labor & Delivery activities related to quality improvement, continuing education, orientation of new personnel and emergency preparedness.
  • The Delivery Room Technician will maintain current knowledge in area(s) of surgical aseptic technique, peri-operative procedures in Labor & Delivery, surgical scrub for C-sections, D&C's and vaginal deliveries, pre-operative patient care, support of the labor patient under direct RN supervision, provide patient transportation, the ordering supplies, charge data and order entry as needed.
  • Assists as a surgical scrub
  • Patient prep and draping
  • Handling instruments, equipment and other materials on the sterile field
  • Prep rooms with appropriate instruments supplies and have standard OR equipment available and in working order.
  • Cleans and restocks LDR rooms after a patient has delivered and been transported to another area.
  • Cleans and restocks C-section room after surgery is completed and the patient is transferred to the recovery area. Order supplies and linen for Labor & Delivery.
