To strengthen our protein production team in our Boston hub in Cambridge, MA, the US we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of: Protein Purification Lead/Principal Scientist.

As the Protein Purification Lead, you will lead a scientific team as the subject matter expert in protein purification, contributing in the laboratory, within project teams, and across functions, and will help define Protein Purification strategies to support Early Solutions drug discovery research at UCB.

  • Apply your scientific expertise to provide innovative approaches for the production of high-quality purified proteins across diverse protein classes
  • Lead from the bench, setting the scientific standard for your team while contributing to multiple drug discovery projects
  • Collaborate with scientific teams across the organization to advance preclinical drug targets.
  • Mentor direct reports, developing their expertise in experimental design and execution as well as guiding professional development.

You will contribute by:

  • Using your subject matter expertise to drive protein purification strategy and manage team resources to support our pipeline of drug discovery projects.
  • Purifying high-quality recombinant cytosolic, secreted, membrane, and refolded proteins. Performing quality control experiments to validate protein quality.
  • Contributing to project team meetings by communicating experimental results and advising on the best methods to generate protein reagents for downstream applications including but not limited to biophysical characterization, structural biology, assay development, screening, and immunization.
  • Supporting protein operations by exploring new technologies, contributing to annual budgets and strategies, and maintaining modern instrumentation in the laboratory

Interested? For this position you'll need the following education, experience, and skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a related field (biochemistry, chemistry, molecular & cellular biology, or biophysics) with 12+ years experience or a Bachelor's or Master's degree with 18+ years experience (including industry experience of 4+ years)
  • Extensive use of an AKTA purification platform and current knowledge of purification methods and protocols.
  • Management of direct reports or teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of upstream and downstream processes such as molecular biology, cell culture, protein expression, structural biology and biophysics, and/or assay development.
  • Familiarity with drug discovery and how protein reagents fit into the process
  • Appreciation of critical path activities and resource prioritization that support project progression.
